Posted by Reinecke Jesslyn on October 16th, 2011 filed in Time ManagementWe have all used the old saying why do today what you can put off until tomorrow. Usually a small dose of procrastination is harmless. For some this can be the difference between a productive work day and not getting the right things done in a work day. Usually this just means you need some help developing a focused time management plan. You might be surprised to learn that eve you can learn good time management skills. Cut down on your distractions and work hard to develop your skills. Keep reading for a few great tips for time management that are easy and helpful in bringing your overall productivity and focus up a notch or two.
Write out a simple list of goals you set for yourself. Writing them with paper and pen and keeping the list somewhere nearby is always best but you can also type them up on the computer. This makes it possible to recollect your focus even when you are away from your computer. It will remind you to stay on task and not spend so much time reading websites or staring out of the window. You taking the time to write out your goals will help you feel as though they are more concrete than a word document that can easily be erased at will. These goals can be big and small. Just do it, write it down. When people ask you to do something, don’t be afraid to turn them down. One of the biggest reasons that people have trouble managing their time is because they don’t say no to people. It is easy to get distracted and to let your work slide when you’re the one who always gets asked for favors. If you have important things to do, get in the habit of refusing, as nicely as possible, requests for help. There’s no reason to say no when you don’t have to. When helping other people will prevent you from doing essential things, however, you should be able to say no.
Remember, you want to work as efficiently as possible, but you also want to do things properly. Never let quality take second place to speed when you are trying to complete an activity.
Turning out high quality work should be your priority, even if you are a little late. If you create your schedule with an honest appraisal of how long each task will take, you won’t run into as much trouble. If something is important, schedule a little more time than you estimate you’ll need for this task. This way, if you need the extra time you’ll have it, and if you don’t need it, you’ll be ahead of schedule. Everyone has the potential to improve their time management abilities. It’s not something you can accomplish all at once, though. It can be hard to train yourself to be more productive, especially if this is new to you. It takes time to build new habits from old ones. Be patient and allow yourself room to make mistakes and to take backward steps every once in a while. At some point, you will realize that you truly understand time management and you won’t even have to think about it.
