Some can’t be procrastinators and still get their work done in a day. Usually this just means you need some help developing a focused time management plan. Time management is fortunately a skill even an old dog can learn. You simply cannot allow yourself the luxury of getting distracted. Keep reading for a few great tips for time management that are easy and helpful in bringing your overall productivity and focus up a notch or two.
Now, sit and write out your goals list. Keep a written list closeby if you decide to write this list on the computer in a word document. This way, when you feel your focus start to wander, you can pull out the list and look at it. Daydreaming and other off task distractions can be curbed with this simple list of goals. Handwriting your goals has a more permanent feel than simply typing them into a word document which can easily be erased. You can make these goals as big or small as you want. Just write them down. Don’t be afraid to say no to people. The inability to say no is, in fact, a major cause of many people’s time management problems. If people are always calling on you for favors, it’s hard to get your own work done on schedule. Learn to politely decline things that will interfere with your major tasks of the day. You don’t have to say “no” all the time. But if you really don’t have the time to spare, you should be firm and make your own work a priority.
Effective time management is not only about how much you get done, but how much you get done while maintaining your standards. As much as you may want to finish a task, never let this take priority over quality.
While schedules and deadlines can be relevant, it’s even more important that your work turns out right. The best way to stay on schedule is to not underestimate how long tasks will take when you plan them. If you need to, give yourself a bunch of extra time to finish that task. It can be very stressful if you only have barely enough time to finish something, so you’re better off giving yourself more time than you’ll probably need. Time management skills can be acquired by anyone. You will, however, have to work at it. It isn’t easy to make changes in your long term habits. It takes time to build new habits from old ones. Be patient and allow yourself room to make mistakes and to take backward steps every once in a while. At some point, you will realize that you truly understand time management and you won’t even have to think about it.
