What Causes Employees To Be Absent

Are you running a small business or a company that is yet to grow? As the business grows whether it is a sole proprietor, partnership or a private limited company you won’t be well placed to perform all the work. If you try you will not only be exhausted but things will get beyond control.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly in your business you need to employ the right people. Getting the right employees who are ready to work without much supervision and giving their best is the dream of every employer.

Employees absenteeism can affect other staff members. They may feel that they have been treated unfair because they're working hard while others are pulling down their efforts by remaining absent. If they remain absent and their employers do not punish them in any way either by not paying them for days they remained absent or receiving official warning letters, fellow employees will feel demoralized.

Employers should be reasonable when some of their employees are absent in certain circumstances. Employees if not well handled they become demoralised which results to low production. There are plenty of reasons explaining why the rate of employee absenteeism is high. What's absenteeism? The labour bureau, Simla defines it as “the total manshifts lost because of absence as a percentage of the total number of manshifts scheduled to work.”

When employees are absent the employer loses a lot. In business there are loyal customers who won't accept to be served by other workers but are attached to one staff member. If they find that particular employee is absent then they forego buying whatever they wanted till that employee resumes. This usually applies to services like hair shaving, hair plaiting, machine repair services and so on.

Reasons Behind Employee Absenteeism

1.) No Reasons- there are employees who remain to be absent and they don’t have any good reason for doing so. Since no employer wants employees who are usually absent then the best thing to do is to terminate them.

2.) Absenteeism Due to Illness-Employers can’t control their employees from falling sick. Due to sickness employees won't be in a position to work and so they remain at home or seek medical care. Some illness may take a couple of days to be treated and this results to absenteeism.

3.) Absenteeism Due to Fatigue-When the employer dictates employees to work for long hours without a break and without giving them off days (leave days) to rest, then this could result to high rate of absenteeism.

4.) Boredom-When employees are bored with the sort of work they do a high percentage of them will remain absent. The monotony might be caused by doing the same work, lack of job enrichment, staff members feeling unchallenged in whatever they are employed to do.

5.) Alcoholics-Alcohol consumption by employees is an enemy of work. Majority of alcohol addicted employees will be absent due to the hangovers they experience.

6.) Absence of Motivation-Employees may begin to be absent if they are not inspired. Motivation of employees is critical in retaining employees and also increasing their productivity.

7.) Burials and other Ceremonies-Employees are absent due to them attending burial ceremonies of their relatives, neighbours or friends. There are also other ceremonies which make employees to be absent.

Employers can curb employee’s absenteeism thru counseling their employees. They should also come up with disciplinary measures. If absenteeism is caused due to lack of motivation, boredom, fatigue or employees who feel they are not being challenged then the employer should motivate, set aside time for employees to rest or give them off days and enrich their jobs respectively.
