Procrastination is not a friend of anyone’s, but almost everyone suffers from it during their lives. It makes people put off doing important tasks that need doing. It can distract us from doing even the most simplest of tasks. As an individual only you have the power to beat procrastination. Learning how to get rid of procrastination is a start though and the fact that you are reading this article is a good thing.

Procrastinators learn to say that they will do things tomorrow rather than today. The truth is, that everyone knows tomorrow will never come. When a person starts to deal with procrastination they are one step nearer to combating it in their lives. We all have a tendency to procrastinate to some degree. Putting off housework will eventually lead to a home that is cluttered and you might feel ashamed when unexpected visitors come round.

The sooner procrastination is overcome the better chances of the problem not spiralling out of control. Once of the best ways of dealing with procrastination is making sure you don’t have any distractions. If it means either putting the phone off the hook or ignoring it for a while then all very well because at least it means you are not procrastinating. Also you might want to tell people not to disturb you and not answer the door if someone rings.

Try to tackle your belief systems and the way you have been thinking. Procrastinators get into bad habits or thought patterns and need to change them before they can change their behaviour. Cognitive behaviour therapists believe that by changing thought processes then actions can be changed.

Occasionally you might get into bad habits again, but try to recognise those periods and nip it in the bud. Learn to be proud of your success and reward yourself from time to time. It is hard to break habits especially if you have had them for a long time. With procrastination you have learned to put things off and not to complete them. This can be a factor in any area of your life.

Usually people who procrastination a lot find that eventually it does take over their life so they hardly get anything done. Combatting procrastination takes discipline, but that is very hard when you are beating yourself up about not being able to do something.
