New Profit and Productivity Models for Doctors

In the old days, physicians used to dispense medicines during patient visits. In fact, it was a foregone conclusion. There were no pharmacies yet, so there was no other choice but to have medical professionals dispense the drugs. That changed, however, when pharmacies were established. Medical professionals were removed from the dispensing process and the practice all but faded away.

That tradition, however, has returned now, because there are so many benefits. In office dispensing solutions are seeing a resurgence, and both patients and medical professionals are reaping the rewards. When you look at the upside, it’s obvious why:

  • Medical professionals get commissions on the medicine and other substances they distribute
  • Patients don’t have to go to the pharmacy to get their drugs
  • Doctors can make sure their patients actually receive the pharmaceuticals, so they have more assurance of compliance

This old-but-new-again approach is working well to streamline doctors’ practices. Another area that has advanced significantly lately for doctors has been EHR management. Revolutionary physician practice management software has made patient records management much simpler than ever before. These software programs make updating patient charts as clicking on an electronic interface that can be held in-hand. When all updates are through, the electronic records repository is automatically updated. The time this saves the practice overall is almost too great to be calculated. Imagine, these records used to be written by hand. After the charts were updated for a particular patient, they also had to be filed away. This meant there had to be enough space in the doctor’s office to hold all the file cabinets it took to house all the charts. The use of EMR, however, invisibly files all that data away on computers. Not only is the information much more compact but the time it takes to manage it is cut drastically. This obviously makes everyone’s lives easier.

As you can probably tell from just the two innovations mentioned, there are definitely powerful ways that medical practices can streamline their operations and optimize profits. Although there are some associated costs, the benefits are more than worth it.
