Remembering Things Better With Countdowns
Posted by Reinecke Jesslyn on February 8th, 2010 filed in Time ManagementCountdowns are time tools that help you remember events or dates in the future. In the past people used simple countdown timer tools including paper calendars and reverse number pads of paper as event reminders. Achieving high tech countdowns is much easier today in the computer era. There are many programs available free online or for purchase as software that accomplish the same tasks quickly and easily.
Physical countdown mechanisms from the past include things like Advent calendars or Christmas paper chains. A box is opened on the Advent calendar each day proceeding Christmas Day. The same concept applies to the paper chain, where one link is removed as each day passes until the chain is gone and it is Christmas Day.
Mechanical countdowns today range from elementary digital timers that you can set for a specific date and the clock runs backwards to zero. This can be seen on television every New Year’s Eve as the countdown clock for the New Year is superimposed over the busy celebration scenes on the street and as the famous “ball” drops to officially announce the event.
Computer programs allow persons to customize a countdown tool with images and to select from a wide range of fonts, styles, colors and time segments. Many of these are available free online and can be found with a simple browser search for “countdown tools” on the Internet.
In addition to being tools to help you remember, countdowns can prompt action. As a date becomes closer there may evolve a sense of urgency, of running out of time. This can be helpful to motivate action to complete a task before times runs out. A timeline for completing tasks can also be created along with the time countdown. This allows a project to move along smoothly so everything needed is accomplished on time.
